David Ruf was born July 3, 1887 in the German village of Holstein, Russia. His parents were Fred and Anna Kelln Ruf. The family sailed to America in 1898, landing in Galveston, Texas. They settled near Lehigh Kansas until land opened in Oklahoma in 1900. They loaded all their belongings onto a train and headed for new homesteads south of Shattuck, Ellis County, Oklahoma. Dave stayed home as a young man and worked on his father's farm to help make a living so the younger brothers and sisters could get an education to become ministers and nurses. His dad attended a church meeting in Guthrie and met Mollie Boehm and her parents. The two fathers agreed that Dave and Mollie would be a good match. Dave traveled to Cherokee and married her a month later on September 10, 1909. Dave and Mollie moved near Scottsbluff, Nebraska where land had been opened for homesteading. They had a sugar beet farm and raised their children. Ruby, Wesley, Irene, Esther, Edward and Ralph.
