Ira Mortimer Hoyt was born on February 23, 1854, in South Norwalk. His father, Ira Ford Hoyt, was 30 and his mother, Mary Pell Wixon, was 26. He married Menia O'Neal (1858 - 1929) in New Jersey in 1873. They had three children: twin daughters, Irene Menia (1875-1965), Mary Frances Hoyt (175-1941), and one son, Ira Ford Hoyt (1876-1942). Ira and Menia divorced. Menia eventually moved back to New Jersey and died there on February 22, 1929 in Plainfield. Following his divorce from Menia, Ira Mortimer married Julita Stratton and they had two children: Julita Stratton Hoyt (1880-1962) and Clegg Wixon Hoyt (1910-1967). Ira died on May 12, 1923, in his hometown at the age of 69, and was buried in Rowayton Union Cemetery, Rowayton.
