Harriet was the daughter of Samuel Worcester Ross (b.1809 MA) and Elvira Marsh (b.1815 MA), who married circa 1836, likely in Massachusetts where their children were born. I found five children for the couple--daughter Frances (b.1837 MA), son Francis N. (b.1838 MA), Henry Worcester (b.1841 MA), Harriet Adaline (b.1842 MA) and Luthera R. (b.1852 VT).

I found the family on the 1850 Census, living in Shaftsbury, Bennington Co., Vermont, where Harriet's father Samuel, aged 41, was farming for a living. Elvira, aged 35, was home with the four children--Frances, aged 13, Francis, aged 12, Henry, aged 9, and Harriet, aged 8.

Two years after that census, daughter Luthera joined the family in 1852 while they were still living in Bennington County, Vermont.

By 1855, the family had moved to Massachusetts. They appeared on that year's state census, living in Montague City, Franklin Co., MA., where Samuel, aged 46, was working a new farm. Elvira, aged 40, was keeping house. Still living at home with their parents were Francis, aged 18, Henry, aged 14, Harriet, aged 13, and Luthera, aged 3.

By the 1860 Federal Census, the family had again relocated. That census year they were living in Hatfield, Hampshire Co., MA. Samuel, aged 50 was a laborer. With him was wife Mary, aged 55. Either Elvira had died and Samuel had remarried, or possibly Mary was Elvira's middle name and the enumerator got her age incorrect, as Elvira would have been only 45 years old in 1860. Still living at home were children Henry, aged 19, Harriet, aged 17, and Luthera, aged 8.

On 8 Dec 1863 (possibly 1864), Harriet married Elijah Shepardson Bissell in Montague, Hampshire Co., MA. He was 37, she was 21. Elijah was the son of John Winthrop Bissell and Sophia Shepardson.

Elijah and Harriet appeared together on an 1865 Census, living in Montague City, Franklin, MA, where Elijah, aged 28, was farming. Hattie, aged 22, was a housewife. There were not yet any children with the couple, but daughter Elsie, born in 1866, may have already been on the way.

Elijah and Harriet had six children together--Elsie S. (1866 MA-1899), Milton G. (b.1869 IN), Ernest Ross (b.1873 IN), John Winthrop (1875-1955), Harriet "Hattie" A. (b.Mar 1878 IN) and Claude Elliott (1880 IN-1953).

In 1870, Harriet would have gotten the news of her father's Samuel's death at age 61. He would miss the marriage of Harriet's sister Luthera to John E. Read on 29 May 1871 in Amherst, MA.

Elijah and Harriet appeared on the 1870 Census, living in Polk Township, Marshall Co., Indiana, where Elijah, aged 34, was working as a merchant's clerk. Hattie, aged 27, was home with their two children--Elsie, aged 4 and Winthrop G. (aka Milton), aged 1. Son Ernest would join the family in 1873, followed by John in 1875, and Hattie in 1878.

The family was still living in Polk Township when the 1880 Census was enumerated on June 26. Elijah (enumerated with E.S. Bissel), aged 44, was a dry goods merchant. Hattie, aged 35, was home with their five children--Elsie, aged 14, Milton, aged 11, Ernest, aged 9, John, aged 4, and Hattie, aged 2. The enumerator noted John as Jane, probably not hearing the name correctly and noting him as a daughter instead of a son. Hattie would have been about three months along with son Claude, who would join the family in December that same year.

Daughter Elsie married M. Clinton Walls on 22 Dec 1886 in Marshall Co., Indiana. She gave birth to son Howard Walls in 1888. Sadly, he died in 1896 at age 7 or 8, and Elsie died three years later in 1899 at age 33.

Son John married Rowena E. Brewer on 5 Oct 1899 in Auglaize Co., Ohio.

In 1900, Elijah and Harriet were living in Plymouth, Marshall Co., Indiana. Elijah, aged 63, gave landlord as his trade. Harriet, aged 57, reported that she had had only four children, all of them living. Somebody made a mistake, either Hattie or the enumerator as she had had six children by that census, five of whom were still alive. Still at home with their parents that census year were Harriet Jr., aged 21, and Claude, aged 19 and working as a dry goods salesman.

In 1910, Elijah, aged 73, and Harriet, aged 66, were living at 500 First St. in Plymouth. Elijah had retired by then and was living off his own income. Harriet correctly reported that she had had six children, but she indicated that all of them had survived to that census year, not accounting for the loss of daughter Elsie in 1899.

On 8 Dec 1913, Elijah and Hattie would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Six years later, death parted the couple, claiming Hattie on 18 Jan 1919. Elijah only lasted about five months without his helpmate, departing this earth on 13 Jun 1919. They rest in eternal peace near daughter Elsie, grandson Howard Walls, and son John and his wife Rowena.
