John was the fourth of six children born to Elijah Shepardson Bissell and Harriet Adeline Ross, who married on 8 Dec 1863 (possibly 1864) in Montague, Hampshire Co., MA.

Elijah and Harriet appeared together on an 1865 Census, living in Montague City, Franklin, MA, where Elijah, aged 28, was farming. Hattie, aged 22, was a housewife. There were not yet any children with the couple, but daughter Elsie, born in 1866, may have already been on the way.

Elijah and Harriet had six children together--Elsie S. (1866 MA-1899), Milton G. (b.1869 IN), Ernest Ross (b.1873 IN), John Winthrop (1875-1955), Harriet "Hattie" A. (b.Mar 1878 IN) and Claude Elliott (1880 IN-1953).

The family appeared on the 1870 Census, living in Polk Township, Marshall Co., Indiana, where Elijah, aged 34, was working as a merchant's clerk. Hattie, aged 27, was home with their two children--Elsie, aged 4 and Winthrop G. (aka Milton), aged 1. Son Ernest would join the family in 1873, followed by John in 1875, and Hattie in 1878.

The family was still living in Polk Township when the 1880 Census was enumerated on June 26. Elijah (enumerated with E.S. Bissel), aged 44, was a dry goods merchant. Hattie, aged 35, was home with their five children--Elsie, aged 14, Milton, aged 11, Ernest, aged 9, John, aged 4, and Hattie, aged 2. The enumerator noted John as Jane, probably not hearing the name correctly and then assuming it was a daughter instead of a son. Hattie would have been about three months along with son Claude, who would join the family in December that same year.

John's sister Elsie married M. Clinton Walls on 22 Dec 1886 in Marshall Co., Indiana. She gave birth to son Howard Walls in 1888. Howard died in 1896 at age 7 or 8, and Elsie died three years later in 1899 at age 33.

That same year, John married Rowena E. Brewer on 5 Oct 1899 in Auglaize Co., Ohio.

I found the couple on the 1900 Census, living in Noble, Auglaize Co., Ohio. John, aged 25, was working as a telegraph operator. Rowena, aged 23, reported that she had not yet had any children.

Their nest began to fill the following year when son Cushman B. arrived in 1901, followed by son Donald A. in 1902 and daughter Lura in 1904. Sometime after Lura's birth in 1904, the family relocated to Illinois.

By the time the 1910 Census came around, John and Rowena had set up housekeeping in Chicago, Cook, IL. That census year, they were living on N. Hamlin Ave. John, aged 34, was working as a general clerk in a law office. Rowena, aged 31, reported that the couple had had three children, and that all were living. At home with their parents were Cushman, aged 9, Donald, aged 8, and Lura, aged 6.

Daughter Erma A. joined the family in 1912.

The year 1919 would have been a sad one for John and his family. He lost his mother Hattie on January 18 and his father Elijah on June 13.

By the 1920 Census, John and Rowena had purchased a house at 4141 Lowell Ave. in Chicago. John, aged 45, was working as an attorney for a bank. Rowena, aged 41, was home with children Donald, aged 18, Lura, aged 16, and Erma, aged 8. Son Cushman had married wife Marion and they had settled in nearby Evanston.

The Ancestry transcription of the 1930 Census record for this family was badly done, making them difficult to find. John, aged 54 and working in official banking, was transcribed as the daughter of Willy and Anna Schmidt. Rowena, aged 50, is unrecognizable in the transcribed version of her name, and she too was supposedly the Schmidt's child. Listed below their parents on the original record, but not grouped with them on the transcribed version were Donald, aged 28 and working as a bank employee, Lura, aged 26 and working as a stenographer for an advertising firm, and Erma, aged 19.

The family was still at the 4141 Lowell Ave. residence in 1940. John, aged 64, was still practicing law. Rowena, aged 60, was keeping house. Still living at home with their parents were Lura, aged 36 and working as a secretary in a law office, and Erma, aged 29 and also working as a secretary, though I could not decipher where.

On 5 Oct 1949, John and Rowena would have celebrated their golden wedding anniversary.

Six years later, death parted the couple, claiming John in 1955 at age 81. Rowena had him laid to rest next to his parents in this cemetery. Rowena died in 1971 and she too was laid to rest here.
