Motor racing driver. Manfred Winkelhock was born in Waiblingen, near Stuttgart, Germany. He began racing with BMW and progressed through their junior team to Formula 2. His Grand Prix began in 1982 with ATS unfortunately his career with this car was plagued by unreliability. After a 5th place in the 1982 Brazilian GP at Rio de Janeiro, 55% of his GP results ended in retirement. There was no doubting his ability and he faired better in sportscars, namely the Kremer Porsche. Sadly at Mosport, Toronto, Canada, his car struck the barriers head on and he died in hospital the following day from head injuries. His brother Joachim also raced cars.
