Born in England, the son of the patriarch of the Astill family, Zachariah and his wife Ann. The family came to America, settling in St. Louis for three years, and later trekking overland to California where they arrived in 1852. James' father bought a large acreage of federal land in the area now known as Roseville. After his father's death in 1874, James continued the tradition of farming a vast tract of land south of Roseville (between Sylvan and Antelope). James Astill died in 1923 at the age of 83.
