Ada's young mother died at or around the time of her birth, 20 year old Catherine Ann Lavinia Collins of Georgetown. A very beautiful photo of Ada's mother is on the Holy Rood /findagrave site. Her father ''Uncle Billy'' was the first city editor of the Evening Star until his death in 1891. He worked at the Star for 27 years. As a teen at the old Star Building across the street from the current location she scampered around the offices giving her friends tours.
She and her husband Samuel Gaskins had 6 daughters, Mrs. Beane, Ann E, Genevieve, Lucille,Mildred & Lavinia Gaskins Cook and a son Harry. She lived to be 92, and the obituary says she had 26 grandchildren and 24 great grandchildren. Also mentions she had 2 brothers Ralph A. Collins & Guy V. Collins who also worked at the Star, Guy for 50 years in the business office, and that her husband worked as a brick mason/ construction and did work on many D.C. buildings including the Lincoln Memorial.
* Obit also says her birthday was on March 5, 1860 instead of other information I had that she was born at the time of her mother's death Nov 3 , 1860. She has no marker which I had hoped would confirm which date is correct.New information is her as having had 3 step sister's and brothers from her dad's wife Laura V. Collins 1846 - 1891. Raymond '67 -, Guy B. '71, Mabel Collins b '79.
