Life comes to close for James Phelan

JAMES PHELAN

James Phelan, 83, longtime resident of Cascade, died at his home here at 10:15 p.m. Saturday. Death was attributed to a heart attack.

Funeral services were held from the Till-Didesch Funeral Home Tuesday morning to St. Martin's church at 10. The Rev. Thomas Bisenius, officiated at the Requiem Mass. The Rev. Daniel O'Sullivan, pastor at St. Martin's, delivered the sermon, and said the prayers at the graveside in Calvary cemetery, where internment was made.

Mr. Phelan was a longtime member of that parish, and its rosary society. The parish rosary was recited at 8 Monday evening at the funeral home.

James Phelan was born in the state of New York, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Phelan, and at an early age came to Dubuque county where he lived many years of his life.

The deceased was married to Theresa Kipp in 1907. She died one year later in November, 1908. He was then married to Frances Kipp, who preceded him in death in December, 1918. He was married April 22, 1930 to Emily Tucker of Cascade, who survives.

Other survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Clarence (Lindy) Wemmer, of Mt. Hope, Wisc; Mrs. Grace Moran, of Cascade; one son, James Phelan of Moline, Ill., 8 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death other than those named above are, two sons, Bernard, in World War II, and Loras in infancy; a brother, John, and a sister, Mrs. Neal (Mae) Kenneally.

Mr. Phelan was a retired blacksmith, practicing his trade in Cascade since 1923. Prior to that year he had lived at Peosta, Ossian and Dubuque. In the latter city after the turn of the century he was a horseshoer in one of the large blacksmith shops, so prevalent in those days.

Honorary pallbearers were: Frank Otting, Chris Green, Elmer C. Moran, Louis Moran, Robert Hawkins, John Hughes, Fred Loes, Leo Sullivan.

Casket bearers included: Verdon Gavin, Kenneth Pedersen, Milton Dolphin, Frank Less, Gerald Goetzinger, Roy Ganfield, Edward Breitbach, Adrian Kurt.
