Stinson was a twin to Wesley Scobee. They were the sons of John Scobee and Nancy Barrett. Stinson first married Hannah M. Hayes. They had 3 sons and she died during the birth of her daughter, Martha Ann. He sold or traded 40 acres of his land to a cabinet maker to make her a coffin.
He later married widow Nancy "Ann" Beard (Coffee) who had 4 daughters. Together they had 6 children.
