James attended school for a time at Lincoln, Nebraska, and also worked for several years as a salesman for the J.V. Farrell Company, of Chicago. On August 16, 1904 he was married to Nellie J. Pridmore in Chicago. They lived for several years at Kankakee, Illinois, where their three children were born.
By 1910, James had returned with his family to his childhood home in Wayne, where he opened his own general merchandise store. He operated the Ahern Store in downtown Wayne until 1947, when he and Nellie moved to Florida. Nellie died there on May 30, 1955. James died in Marin County, California, on August 21, 1962.
James was survived by his son John and two daughters, Margaret (Wertman) and Marian (Lippold); a brother, Arthur, and two sisters, Johanna (Smith) and Martina (Fowler).
