Harry Arthur Smith was born at Millington, Michigan, on April 18, 1881, the son of Michigan natives Sylvester Smith and Martha Wells. The Smith family operated a farm northeast of Flint, Michigan.

Harry moved west in the early 1900’s and was operating a farm in northeast New Mexico in 1910 when he was married to Nebraska native Johanna Ahern. They had three children while they lived in New Mexico. They moved to South Dakota in 1915 and had three more children during the 12 years they lived there. When they moved to South Dakota, Harry started working for the National Refining Company.

In 1927 Harry and Johanna moved again, taking their family to Mankato, Minnesota. Harry died at Mankato on October 22, 1931, seven days after he struck by a car as he was walking home. Funeral services were held in Mankato, with interment at Calvary Cemetery.

He was survived by his wife and six children: Maurice Arthur, John Vincent, Elizabeth, James Wallace, Joseph Aloysius and Philip Anthony; also, two brothers, Howard and Paul, and a sister, Mabel. Harry’s parents both died in 1930. His wife died in 1975.
