Maurice Arthur Smith was born at Clayton, New Mexico, on April 20, 1911. He was the son of Harry Arthur Smith and Johanna Ahern. The Smith family lived in New Mexico until 1915, when they moved to South Dakota. In 1927, they moved to Mankato, Minnesota. Maurice served in the U.S. Navy from 1928 to 1932 then in U.S. Coast Guard during World War II.

On June 8, 1937, Maurice was married to Minnesota native Marie Schueller at Aberdeen, South Dakota. They lived for a time in South Dakota and Minnesota, before moving to Connecticut, making their home at East Lyme starting in 1946. Maurice owned and operated Smith’s Radio Service in Niantic until 1964 and then worked as an electronics technician for Electric Boat for 10 years, retiring in 1976. He was also the first full-time director of the East Lyme Parks and Recreation Commission.

Maurice died at New London, Connecticut, on February 8, 1985. Funeral services were held at St. Matthias Church, with interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery in New London. He was survived by his wife, six sons and a daughter; 16 grandchildren; two brothers, Joseph and Philip; and a sister, Elizabeth (Bernstein). He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John and James.
