On the 1880 Cherokee County, Texas census, William M. Couch is shown living with his brother, Henry Andrew Couch, on the family farm in Cherokee County, Texas. Henry Andrew Couch’s land adjoined that of his father, Drury Couch’s land. William would have been about twenty-one or twenty-two years old in 1880, and he was likely living with Henry Andrew Couch in order to assist him on his farm.
William M. Couch married Elizabeth “Lizzie” Lee Towles, daughter of Dr. Albert Towles and Mary Ann Howell Towles. They were married on November 28, 1881, in a joint ceremony, in Cherokee County, Texas. William M. Couch’s brother, Silas M. Couch, married Carrie Ada Howell on the exact same day. Carrie Ada Howell was the sister of Lizzie Lee Towles’ mother, Mary Ann Howell Towles. Certainly 28 November 1881 would have been a time of celebration for the Couch, Howell, and Towles families in Cherokee County, Texas. William M. Couch was twenty-three years old when he married Lizzie Lee Towles, and Lizzie was only about seventeen or eighteen years old.
