Lizzie Lee Towles was born in December 1864 in Chambers County, Alabama. The parents of Lizzie Lee Towles were Dr. Albert Towles and Mary Ann Howell Towles. The Towles family has a long, distinguished history of patriotism and service to our country. Lizzie Lee Towles’ great-great grandfather, Stokley (Stokeley) Towles (b: 1743 in Middlesex Co, Virginia d: ca. 1781 in South Carolina), was in the South Carolina Militia during the Revolutionary War. He fought in a number of battles and died in the war effort. Lizzie’s father, Dr. Albert Towles, fought in the Civil War. Dr. Albert Towles, was cashiered 17 Feb 1863, in the 47th Alabama Infantry Regiment, Company, Chambers Co, Alabama, in the Civil War.

Elizabeth “Lizzie” Lee Towles married William M. Couch, son of Drury Couch and Mary Ann Howell on November 28, 1881, in a joint ceremony, in Cherokee County, Texas. William M. Couch’s brother, Silas M. Couch, married Carrie Ada Howell on the exact same day. Carrie Ada Howell was the sister of Lizzie Lee Towles’ mother, Mary Ann Howell Towles. Certainly 28 November 1881 would have been a time of celebration for the Couch, Howell, and Towles families in Cherokee County, Texas. William M. Couch was twenty-three years old when he married Lizzie Lee Towles, and Lizzie was only about seventeen or eighteen years old. Their marriage license is recorded in Cherokee County, Texas, records in Marriage Book I, page 108. The marriage of Silas M. Couch and Carrie Ada Howell is also recorded in Book I, on page 108.

William M. Couch and Elizabeth (Lizzie) Lee Towles had the following children:
• Ila, born in March 1884
• Homer Charles, born on 8 March 1886 and died on 15 April 1942
• Burnard, born in February 1888
• Delbert, born in December 1890
• Wiley, born in June 1892
• Nettie, born in October 1895
• Earl Toliver, born in February 1897 (Earl’s middle name was Toliver, named after Lizzie Lee’s grandfather, Toliver Towles)

After William M. Couch, married Lizzie Lee Towles, they established their own farm in Cherokee County, Texas. On 2 September 1891, “William M. Couch and wife, L. L. Couch sold 70 acres of land to Charles S. Nesbitt, a part of the Jose Pineda East 4 Leagnes Grant, and a part of a 300 acre tract of said grant, situated about 2 ½ miles East of Jacksonville, Texas, which 300 acre tract was owned and resided upon in 1869 by B. F. Brittain and John Matkins …” (Cherokee, Texas Deed Book 4, page 312.) There are land deeds in 1892 in Hamilton County, Texas, showing that both Drury Couch and his son, William M. Couch, moved out to Hamilton County for a short period of time and purchased adjacent tracts of land there. Apparently the land was too rocky to farm, and they sold it. Both Drury and William M. Couch can be found back in Cherokee County, Texas, and the bordering county, Smith County, after 1892.

William M. Couch died in 1897 at the young age of 39. The cause of death is unknown. His widow, Lizzie Couch, is on the 1900 Smith County, Texas, census with all of the children listed.

On 12 April 1903, Lizzie Lee Towles Couch married John Allen Brown in Smith County, Texas. Little is known of Lizzie Lee Towles Couch and John Allen Brown after their marriage. It has been assumed that Lizzie died about 1904 or 1905 as her children can be found split up and living with various family members after 1904.
