Aged S.A. Woman Dies In Flames

Clothing Set Afire By Stove
By Frank Trejo

An 81-year-old woman failed Friday evening in a courageous effort to save herself from a flaming death.

Mrs. Francisca Acevedo's clothing caught fire when she brushed against a cook stove burner in the kitchen of her home.

Suffered Burns

Mrs. Acevedo, 232 King in South San Antonio suffered burns over most of her body and was dead on arrival at Robert B. Green Hospital.

But before she died, firemen said, the gallant woman, who walked with a cane, made her way to the kitchen sink where she turned on the water and was able to douse some of the fire.

She then staggered into the living room and tried to place a telephone call for help.

Failing there, she walked into the bathroom in an apparent effort to reach the shower. She collapsed face down on the bathroom floor.

Traced Path

Firemen traced her path through pieces of charred clothing and bloody handprints.

Mrs. Mary Olguin, a daughter, found Mrs. Acevedo's body.

Mrs. Olguin told firemen she had just completed removing space heaters from the house in order to protect her mother from fire.
