Playwright. He was born and educated in Dublin, taking up study at the Middle Temple in London at the age of 18. He became known for adapting other literary works into stage plays, the first being 'The Persian Prince' at the age of 22. He then joined the military and rose to the position of Captain, but gave it up after six years to concentrate on his writing. He then gave himself up entirely to dramatic writing. He added prologues and epilogues to works by Dryden, as well as adapting two novels of Aphra Behn for the stage. His later plays, mostly original works, were not as succesful but he remained popular until his death at his home in Petty France, Westminster.
