Mamie Tawney Haines, 103, of Newton, W.Va., died March 29, 2011, at home.
She was born Sept. 24, 1907, in Newton, a daughter of the late Aaron and Almon Graham Tawney.
She was retired from the office of Siberling Rubber Plant in Akron, Ohio, and had also worked in restaurants and was a waitress at a country club while in Ohio, all while putting herself through highschool. She enjoyed traveling, and also had lived in Juno Beach, Fla. where she swam in the ocean every day. While in Florida, she fought for and won a public entrance to the beach after a condominium was built in front of her house. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and attended the Newton Methodist Church.
She is survived by a sister, Anna Desposito of Albuquerque, N.M., and two brothers, Jarrett "Buzz" Tawney of Spencer, W.Va. and Dan Tawney of Newton.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Irving C. "Irv" Haines; two sisters, Florence Dalton and Mabel Tawney Rogers; and five brothers, Harry, Earnest, Garrison, Clark, and Clement Tawney.
Service will be 11 a.m. Saturday at the Newton Methodist Church with Rev. Kenneth Boggs officiating. Burial will be in the Tawney Cemetery near Newton. Visitation is one hour prior to the service at the church.
Taylor-Vandale Funeral Home in Spencer is in charge of the arrangements.
