Edward spent the first few years of his life in Thornton, Lancashire before moving to Bradford, Manchester with his family in around 1854.

Edward trained as a carpenter and married his wife Ellen Jane in 1868 at Manchester Cathedral.

In 1874 Edward took over the rent of shop premises at 221 Mill Street, Bradford, Manchester where he set up a business selling beer, he also continued with his carpentry work. Unfortunately Edward didn’t inherit his father’s business acumen, six months after his father’s death in 1881 he filed for bankruptcy. The last of Edward’s seven children was born in October 1883.
