He is a documented patriot in the Daughters of the American Revolution and Sons of the American Revolution.

BIO: Joseph's father James Leary was the first of the family to the country and probably from Ireland. He owned a vessel and about 1730 it was captured by the French during the French War and he died in prison. He married a Miss Owens. Their son Joseph Leary was born in Delaware and in the Revolutionary war served mostly in the marshes and then came to Kent Co MD and married Miss Redgrave, dau of Abraham Redgrave and became a school teacher. He was born in 1760 and died in 1821 and was a member of the Episcopal Church. This information was given in the Portrait and Biographical Record of the Eastern Shore of Maryland copyright 1898 for his grandson Columbus A. Leary and George E. Leary his brother (both sons of Rev George Leary)

He married Sarah Redgrave on Sep 7 1801 in Kent County, MD. Sarah is the dau of Abraham Redgrave 1755-1804, Patriot of the American Revolution, and wife Frances Smith c1760-bef 1787. His parents are Joseph Redgrave 1710-1779 and Elizabeth Corse 1717-1793, documented Patriot of the American Revolution in the Sons of the American Revolution.
