Joseph L. Ness, age 70, of Hinckley, passed away March 9, 1997, at Mercy Center Hospital in Aurora. He was born November 24, 1926, in Sheridan, IL, the son of Joseph and Josephine (Johnson) Ness.

Joe was united in marriage April 3, 1949, at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ in Hinckley to the former Rita Wahlgren, and they spent the next 48 years of their lives together.

Mr. Ness was a member of St. Paul’s United Church of Christ, having served as its past president. He was a farmer in the area for many years and was a member of the DeKalb County Farm Bureau. He served with the United States Army, and was a member of its band during World War II. Joe was a past Commander and Treasurer of the Big Rock American Legion Post #549. He was a charter member of the Big Rock Fire department and was also a member of the Aurora Moose Lodge #400. It was well known to his family and friends that farming was Joe’s life and much-loved hobby.

Survivors include his wife, Rita, of Hinckley; three children, Karen (Scott) Hill of Rockford, and Kathy (Robert) Smith, of Earlville; ten grandchildren, Lindsey and Mallory Ness, Keegan, Alec, Kellen, Aren and Breida Hill, Nick Smith, Jaimie Parks and Terry Brue; two great grandchildren, Kelsey Parks and Kayla Brue; four sisters, Betty Beck of Hinckley, Nell (Eddie) Evans of Big Rock, Irene Ayers of Long Beach, CA, and Lucille (Mark) Evans of Hamilton, MT; his mother-in-law, Ivy Wahlgren of Cave Creek, AZ; as well as many nieces and nephews and friends who will miss him dearly.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two sons, Jeffery and Tim; four brothers, Howard, Osmond, Francis, Merwin and Jim Ness; one sister, Ruth Ann Dorian; and his father-in-law Herbert “Hub” Wahlgren.

Funeral services were held March 12, 1997, at St. Paul‘s United Church of Christ, with Rev. Kate Feeney-Bastian officiating. Interment took place in the Greenwood Cemetery in Hinckley.

A memorial fund is being established by Joe’s family.
