Mary (Mello) DeMello, 89, of Fairhaven passed away Friday, March 9, 2012 at St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Manuel “Captain Mud” DeMello.
Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Joseph and Maria (Gonsalves) Mello, she graduated from New Bedford High School in 1941 and lived in Acushnet since 1938. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Fairhaven.
Mary worked at Aerovox for 25 years as well as Mars Bargain Land where she was a cashier for over 20 years. Her and her husband enjoyed their flower and vegetable gardens. They also enjoyed fishing together and with their family. Mary would crochet blankets and booty’s for various local charities.
She is survived by two sons, John DeMello of Acushnet and Robert DeMello and his wife Charlene of New Bedford; a daughter, Joann DeMello and her companion Dennis Ducharme of Achushnet; five grandchildren, Laura DeMello, Lisa, John DeMello, Jr. and Janet and Lillian; and several grandchildren and nieces and nephews. Mary was the sister of the late Joseph Mello and Lena Machado.
Calling hours are Monday from 5-8 PM in the Fairhaven Funeral Home, 117 Main Street, Fairhaven. Her funeral will be Tuesday, March 13, 2012 at 9:00 AM from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 AM in St. Mary’s Church, Fairhaven. Interment will be in Acushnet Cemetery.
