Rodney Newton Mills was born to Hannah (Smith) and Charles Mills on September 12, 1884 at the family farm near Buffalo. He attended an elementary country school (Kobbe school), started Buffalo High School but finished high school at the Farm School, University of Minnesota, St Paul Campus. He farmed the family farm until his retirement, specializing in registered Holstein cattle. For many years he managed the Buffalo Livestock Shipping Association, and the local creamery. He was an active member of the Buffalo Methodist Church, later joined the Baptist Church, and in his last year supported the Unitarian Church.

On June 22, 1910, he was united in marriage to Minnie Sterling. Three children were born to them, Chester, Ione, and Ardis.

Upon retiring in 1949 Rodney and Minnie moved to Phoenix Arizona where they lived until her death in 1957. After that he lived with his children except for the last 19 months which he spent in Long Beach CA, where he enjoyed senior citizen activities. He was in good health until his death.
