Charles Mills was born September 26, 1839, in Indiana. He was a Civil War veteran along with two brothers, Almarion and Norman, who both died in the war. Charles fought at Gettysburg and the battle of Spotsylvania. He married Hannah Smith of LaGrange County, Indiana. They married in Ohio when he was released from prison camp after the war. Charles and Hannah settled on a farm two miles east of Buffalo, Wright County and farmed with their children Arthur, Russell, Rodney, Margaret and Alma. Charles was a quiet man and prone to what was called 'melancholy' in those days, likely post-traumatic stress from his time at war and in the prison camp.

Federal Veteran pension card - applied for pension 2-6-1890 in Minnesota. Widow Hannah applied for widow's pension 8-4-1904 in Minnesota. Her file will have proof of marriage etc...
