1943. Navy Dept. announced "Seaman Charles Brandt, 19, was killed in action in the Mediterranean area. He was aboard the ten-thousand-ton cruiser USS Savannah, which was damaged when enemy planes scored a bomb hit on a gun turret during the Allied landings at Salerno, Italy." (In fact, new German technology, the remote control glider bomber, was the weapon used against the invasion fleet.)
Charles was in the service two years. He was survived by his mother Frieda and three sisters, Lillian, Ruth, and Dorothy.
