Mrs. Bernelle Pennington Colley, age 85, died Monday at Memorial Health in Savannah following a brief illness. The native and lifelong resident of Bulloch County was a 1945 graduate of Portal High School. Bernelle worked for several years with the Georgia Department of Labor and served as clerk for the City of Portal for over 25 years. Additionally she served as the Post Master Replacement from 1979 until her retirement in 2006. She was a partner in Paradise Estates Development in Portal. Bernelle assisted her sons with their restaurant; Boyd’s BBQ in Statesboro and worked with City Café in Portal. During her retirement she cared for and adopted many cats and dogs. She tried to care for and adopt any stray animal that she found.

Mrs. Colley was preceded in death by her husband, Jackey David Colley in 1979.

Surviving are two sons, Sam Alan Colley, II and Donna Cannon of Statesboro and Jack David Colley and Venita Cail of Statesboro and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive visitors on Friday from 1:00pm until 2:00pm at Joiner-Anderson Funeral Home in Statesboro.

Graveside services and burial will be Friday following the visitation in the Eastside Cemetery with Rev. Bob Conley officiating.

Pallbearers will be David Colley, Alan Colley, Mike Pennington and Steve Pennington.
