Carol Beverly Schumm (nee Williams) died peacefully at her home in Tallahassee on February 14, 2015. Carol was born in Peoria, Illinois on November 25, 1928 to Lloyd and Pauline (Spaulding) Williams. She graduated from Pekin High School in 1946. It was while living in Pekin that she met the love of her life, Robert Schumm.
They married on May 25, 1947 and began a union that lasted 64 years.
In 1956, Carol and Bob relocated to Des Plaines, Illinois where they raised their family. Carol spent many years serving on the PTA, volunteering with the Girl Scouts, and serving as a reading assistant and room mother at Central Elementary School.
She worked at UOP in Des Plaines for ten years before retiring in 1983.
At retirement, Carol and Bob moved to Tallahassee, where Carol began a second career as a volunteer with Tallahassee Community Hospital (now Capital Regional Medical Center). Carol logged 30 years and 30,000 hours working in the volunteer office, delivering newspapers and beverages to patients and their families, and making special holiday outfits for newborns.

She was honored as Volunteer of the Year by both the hospital and the City of Tallahassee. In 2004, Carol was honored with the Frist Humanitarian Volunteer Award, a recognition given to just one volunteer in the HCA network of approximately 200 hospitals. Carol leaves behind a legacy of love, a treasure trove of family recipes, hundreds of hand-crocheted afghans, and a shining example of caring for others.
Carol was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; parents Lloyd and Pauline; sisters Marjorie Ferguson and Elizabeth Frankenstein and brother Lee Williams.
She is survived by four children: Susan Schumm of Tallahassee, Nancy (Mike) Spengler of Bartlett, Illinois; Lori (Paul) Fearnside of Lakeville, Minnesota; and Robert (Rita) Schumm of Schiller Park, Illinois. She also leaves: grandchildren Brian (Alison) Spengler, Andrew (Jessica) Spengler, Thomas (Jennifer) Spengler, Emily (Mark) Hanson and Benjamin (Leah) Fearnside; great-grandchildren Tessa, Mason, Emerson and Maddox Spengler; "daughter by choice" Nancy Spears, nieces and nephews, and many other friends.
Visitation will be from 10:00 AM until 12 PM on Thursday, February 19, 2015, at Culley's MeadowWood Funeral Home at 700 Timberlane Road with funeral services beginning at 12 PM.
