Ashley kept extensive journals during his time at sea, and late in life he sat down to write his autobiography. He is the first mariner in the United States to do so. This autobiography was edited by Daniel Vickers and published in 2006.
Ashley has no existing tombstone, but that he is buried here is found in Vickers, p. 140: "He was interred in a spot chosen by himself in the New M.H. ground, with his kindred, but so as to rise and face St. Michael's Church."
