JOHN W GAMBLE was born in a log cabin near Springfield Neb, in 1879.
Thrown on is own resources at 12, he entered high school, and did chores on a farm a mile away for his board.
He graduated with highest honors in the class, and was made class valedictorian.
Went to work on a farm at $18 a month, and saved the money to pay back the $25 he borrowed for graduation clothes.
Was chosen to teach the country district school in the winter-the school whose "hard-boiled" big boys had run out the teachers for three successive years. He stuck, and brought order out of chaos. A number of the boys he ad to "thrash" at the time are now among his warmest friends.
Attended State Normal at Peru, Neb., during the summers, where he graduated, and was later called back as instructor in the summer sessions.
Then worked his was through the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, graduating with high scholastic honors.
Was elected county superintendent and placed the schools on such and effective basis that the plan was adopted by the sate as a model for other counties.
Resigned from the county superintendency to accept the call to be city superintendent of the county seat, where he again built up a splendid city school system.
During his teaching years he acted as newspaper correspondent also for a syndicated of newspapers, and contributed many articles besides to magazines,
Clerked in a department store in Seattle, and gained first hand experience behind the retail counter.
Returned to Nebraska and Omaha to become secretary of the Standard Chemical Mfg. Co.
Was made president of the company within three years.
Was made president of the Omaha Manufactures' Association.
Elected president of the Omaha Chamber of Commerce within seven years after arriving in the city. During his administration he directed the war activities of the city in addition to serving on the fuel commission.
In 1919 elected vice president of the First National Bank of Omaha, and institution with deposits more than $20,000,000.
Is president of the Don Lee Furniture Co., American Macinery and Supply Co., Omaha, and the John W Gamble Co., besides president of the Standard Chemical Mfg. Co. and director of the First National Bank of Omaha.
He is a member of the board of governors of Ak-Sar-Ben and a member of the board of directors of the Mississippi Valley Association, and former vice president of the National Rivers and Harbors Congress.
He has traveled extensively in Europe and South America gathering first and information on markets.
Was sent to Europe to spend three months studying financial and social problems in England and the continent.
