Charles Langerhans, veteran shoeman and prominent Southside resident died unexpectedly yesterday afternoon while mowing the lawn at his home 209 West Dunklin Street. A cerebral hemorrhage caused his death.

Mr. Langerhans was apparently in good health. He had bowled with his team at the Evangelical Alleys Friday night and had not complained yesterday.

He began mowing the lawn shortly after 2 o'clock. An hour later he was found lying near the mower. Dr. Leslie, county coroner was summoned and pronounced him dead. He said no inquest was necessary and that a cerebral hemorrhage had caused death.

The 82 year old shoe manufacturer and dealer spent his entire life in Jefferson City except for five years in Sedalia and Memphis, Tenn.

He was born here August 19 1862, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Langerhans, pioneer residents of the southside. He learned the cobbler's trade while a youth and devoted his life to making shoes.

He engaged in business on High Street for a number of years under the firm name of Scott and Langerhans and later conducted a store of his own in the west end. For the past 15 years he had conducted a business at his home catering to his old customers and friends.

He and Miss Caroline Weiss were married May 14, 1889 and she with three children, Louis E., one of the owners of Bartlett's Bookstore, Miss Charlotte M., for many years secretary of the Jefferson City School Board and Miss Agnes, survive. There are two grandchildren.

Mr. Langerhans had a wife acquaintance throughout Cole county. He was active in the Evangelical church of which he had been a lifelong member and was prominent in the brotherhood of that church for years.

The body will lie in state at the Thorpe J. Gordon Funeral Chapel from 11 o'clock today until 1230 pm Monday when it will be removed to the Evangelical church to lie in state there until 2 pm the hour of the funeral. Rev. H.J. Damm will conduct the services and burial will be in Riverview.
