Remains Brought Home

The remains of Elmer Danes, son of Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Danes, were brought home from the Philippines Wednesday and interred in the post cemetery [now part of Forest Cemetery] Thursday. Rev. Hodgson conducted the service at the grave in the presence of a number of friends of the family. The young man was 20 years of age and first enlisted in the Second Washington volunteers. He re-enlisted in the thirty-fifth infantry company E, in July, 1900, and went with the regiment to the Philippines. While acting as an escort to one of the governors in July, 1900 [October, 1900], he was captured along with four others and killed by the Filipinos.

Elmer Danes was in a party of eight privates from the 35th Infantry Regiment, U.S.V., escorting José Buencamino, the newly installed presidente of the municipality of San Miguel (de Mayumo), province of Bulacan, who were attacked on Oct. 30, 1900 by a force of approximately 30 guerrillas on the Baliuag road near the Maasim River, province of Bulacan (Luzon).

Private John Howard Brewer was killed in the attack. Privates William A. Staffeld and Matthew Mahalla were wounded.

Privates Frank H. Wilson, Hamlet Jarvis, Jr., John F. Hickman, Elmer Danes and William A. Hepler were taken prisoner.

The five prisoners were murdered by guerrillas in the Candaba swamp, Province of Bulacan, on or about Nov. 4, 1900. Presidente Buencamino was murdered separately.
