Son of Major Hierome Lindsay and Margaret (Muse) Opie.

Birth date from the genealogical notes of Colonel Opie's granddaughter, Miriam Opie Chancellor, daughter of Dr. Thomas Lindsay Opie.

Hierome grew up in Jefferson County. He was the older brother of famous Confederate Army nurse, Juliet Opie Hopkins, known as the "Florence Nightingale of the South".

During the war, Hierome L. Opie served in the Confederate Army, as the Assistant Quartermaster of Staunton, with the rank of captain. He was also a Colonel of the Virginia militia before and during the war, serving as an adjutant for Western Virginia, the region not the state. He also acted as a brigade inspector. The latter information about his colonelcy came from his grandson, Brigadier General Hierome Lindsay Opie, in a newspaper article from 1940.

The 1915, "Encyclopedia of Virginia Biographies, Volume IV" by Lyon Gardiner Tyler, L.L D." has additional information about his Confederate military service from pages 177-179.

"He met his death by accident while engaged in drilling a company which he was organizing to enter the Confederate army, was thrown from his horse and fatally injured."

The incident is also recalled by his son, Captain John N. Opie, in his autobiography "A Rebel Cavalryman".
