John Goldhammer was a Detective Sergeant for the New York City Police Department in New York. He was in charge of the Rackets Squad and worked for the Police Force for 12 years, dying in the line of duty, at age 34.

Sgt. Goldhammer was attempting to arrest a suspect wanted for several robberies. He disguised himself as a regular civilian and went to the suspects home at 1270 First Avenue in Manhatten.

When he arrived, the suspect answered the door. The suspect fled inside his apartment and picked up a .32 caliber revolver. A struggle ensued between Sgt. Goldhammer and the suspect, the suspect shot Sgt. Goldhammer once, killing him. The suspect was arrested without incident by the next Officer responding to a shooting. The man was charged with murder, no other info known.
