HIRAM BURGAR
Was born June 14, 1826, in Canada. He died at Axtell, Kansas, November 27, 1897, aged 71 years, 5 months and 13 days, and was buried in the cemetery near this city on Tuesday afternoon. February 14, 1845, he was untied in married to Jane Metcalf, who died ten years ago last June. Nine children blessed this union, viz: Mary, Ellen, Eliza, Martha, Henrietta, Cordelia, Cornelia, James and John. Eliza and John are dead.

Mr. Burgar and family came to Kansas in 1855, locating in Nemaha county. Here he resided for 35 years. In 1890 he went to Axtell, where he lived with his daughter, Mrs. Livingstone. Here he has lived a quiet and retired life. His neighbors and acquaintances speak of him as a good man. He was a Christian and united many years ago with the M. E. Church in Seneca. It is the testimony of his friends that his life was consistent with his profession. He was a faithful husband, a loving father and a hospitalble friend. Even tempered and cheerful in all his life, when grim death came with the terrible suffering of his last sickness, and made the "valley of the shadow" doubly hard to pass, he met it all with the same patient and cheerful spirit, entirely resigned to the will of God.
"Oh death, where is they sting." "O grave, where is thy victory."
"Thanks be to God, which givith us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."

A large number of the town friends of Hiram Burgar got up a surprise on Tuesday night this week and accompanied by several from the country made a raid on him and his excellent family. There was some forty in the company, who met at J. H. Hatch's in order to start together. Mr. and Mrs. Burgar were completely "surprised," but enjoyed the visit much the more. Father Taylor and wife and Chris. Denny and wife had been at Mr. Burgar's all day "seeing to things," and so everything was in readiness. Plenty of provisions was taken along, and a royal supper served. There were a host of young folks in the party, and so we had plenty of singing and fun. Mr. Burgar has a beautiful home, and all were glad to surprise him.
