John M. Slaughter, 88, died February 14, 2015, in Rockville, Maryland, of complications of heart disease.
John was born in Birmingham, Alabama, attended Ramsey High School there, served in the Navy in World War II, and received a degree in chemical engineering from Georgia Tech. He worked for Union Carbide in West Virginia for 36 years, taking a happy early retirement after holding management positions in the Institute and South Charleston plants and traveling to Europe and Japan on behalf of Carbide. He enjoyed golf, travel, and crossword puzzles and was a lifelong fan of the Ramblin' Wreck. He was known for his keen wit, love of a party, and rhymed doggerel invented for any occasion.
John was married to Anne Smith Slaughter of Montgomery, Alabama, for 51 years; they moved to Scott Depot, West Virginia, in 1956, where they reared five children.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Anne in 1998, sister Louise Burke, and nephew Alex Burke.
Memorial donations in lieu of flowers can be sent to St. Timothy's Episcopal Church in Hurricane, WV, or the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.
