William Pitt Earle, fourth son of William and Martha Pinto Earle, was b at Worcester, Mass. 1812 and d. in New York City 1884. At an early age, he removed with his parents to Hartford, Conn., where at the age of 21 he opened the famous Clinton House. He soon outgrew Hartford and in a few years went to New York City and opened the Lorrilard House, afterwards known as Earle's Hotel. He became very popular and his reputation as a hotelkeeper was world-wide. In that business he accumulated a large fortune, which was greatly increased by his successful investments in real-estate. At the time of his death his fortune was estimated at between $2,000,000 and $4,000,000. Mr. Earle was the organizer and for many years a director of the Park Bank of New York City.
