Pauline Emma Carstens Rice, 77, died Nov. 7, 1996, at Boise, Idaho. She was born Sept. 9, 1919, to Emma Bierman Carstens and August Carstens at Agra.
..She graduated from Agra High School. On Aug. 17, 1941, she married David R. Rice at her parents' farm home near Agra.
..The Rices resided in Roswell, N.M.; Mt. Vernon, Wash.; Lawrence; Kansas City, Kan.; Moundridge; and the family farm of David's parents, Jess and Theo Rice, near Athol during David's service with the U.S. Navy. The family relocated to Denver during the time when their four children were growing up.
..Pauline was active in the American Medical Society Women's Auxiliary, serving as president of the Colorado Chapter; The Messiah Lutheran Church wedding hostess; and a gardening club while being a mother and a homemaker throughout her husband's active psychiatric practice.
..All four of her children -- Terry, Sam, Gemma, and Robin -- graduated from Denver area high schools. Pauline and David lived in Boise, Idaho, for the past eight years, where Pauline could enjoy watching three of her grandchildren growing up.
..In the years prior to returning to Boise, Pauline had spent nearly 10 years enjoying their mountain home in the foothills of Boulder County above Jamestown, Colo., where she entertained family and friends.
..Pauline was active, sharing her time and talents, including her contributions to church and civic organizations in Boise: Immanuel Lutheran Church Altar Guild and Lutheran Women's Circle; DaVinci Art Guild; and the Ada County Medical Auxillary Book Club.
..Pauline had many endearing personal traits. Her unconditional love as a mother provided tremendous support and security for her children and grandchildren. Her close-knit family of brothers and sisters were a constant source of joy and tradition. She was a kind-hearted nonjudgmental, inspirational and spiritual woman.
..Pauline was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Hilda Miller; a brother, Reed Carstens; and a grandson, Jared Rice.
..Survivors are her husband, Dr. David R. Rice of Boise; her children and their spouses: Sam and Linda Rice of Athol; Terence and Jan Rice of Jamestown, Colo.; Gemma and Bill VanHole of Boise,; and Robin and Dennis Wood of Laguna Hills, Calif.; six grandchildren, Jason Jess Rice and wife Jennifer of Overland Park; Hilary, Laura and Nicholas VanHole; Joslin and Monica Beck; brothers, Dick Carstens of Kensington; Harry Carstens of Phoenix, Ariz.; and Levi Carstens of Isanti, Minn.; sisters, Ella Fisher of Denver; Danilda Watts of Clearwater; Doris Mahn of Cheyenne, Wyo.; Lucine Harris of Salina; and Lorraine Bridges of Houston, Texas.
..The funeral service was Nov. 11th at St. John Lutheran Church, Kensington, with Pastor Constance Morrow officiating.
..Galen Larson was the soloist and Evelyn Krein organist.
..Casket bearers were Larry Miller, Murray Carstens, Dennis Wood, Martin Seeman, Bill VanHole, and Carey Miller. Burial was at Olive Branch Cemetery, Kensington.
