Eugene Lankford Jr., 92, a retired physicist, died Sunday, May 21, 2006, in Arlington.
Funeral: 10 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church, Vandergriff Chapel, 313 N. Center St., Arlington. Burial: Moore Memorial Gardens. Visitation 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Eugene Lankford Jr. was born Jan. 5, 1914, in DeFalls Bluff, Ark., to Judge Eugene Lankford Sr. and Lucy Lee Jones Lankford. The family moved to Cisco when Gene was 5. He was an Eagle Scout and graduated from Cisco High School, Cisco's Randolph Junior College and the University of Texas in Austin with a bachelor of science in physics. Gene also did advanced degree research in crystal structures at the University of Texas and developed a method for making synthetic rubies. Gene worked as an aerospace engineer for LTV for 20 years before starting his own manufacturing business.

Gene was an avid tennis player and played in the Senior Olympics. He was instrumental in establishing the Arlington Tennis Center and served as president of the Arlington Tennis Association.

Eugene was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Charles Lankford.

Survivors: Wife of 56 years Dr. Frances Lankford; daughters, Patricia Lankford Akers and husband, Monte Akers, and Lynda Lee Lankford; son, Charles Eugene Lankford and wife, Lisa Bain Lankford; grandchildren, Nathan Akers, Megan Akers and Spencer Lankford; brothers, Dr. Livius Lee Lankford; nephew, Dr. Larry Lankford; and nieces, Mary Lee Morris, Saralyn Woods and Nancy Lankford.
