Percy Conklin was born in Peekskill, N.Y. to Stephen and Sarah (Young) Conklin. The Conklin family had been there since before the Revolutionary War. He had two brothers, Walter and George and a sister (Mary) Lottie. The family was Methodist.
Percy moved to Ct and lived with his sister and her husband. He was listed as one of the "trustees" of the Total Abstinence and Benevolence Society in Southington, CT. In 1909, 22 yr. old Percy competed in the T.A.B. marathon. He owned and managed a lunch cart in Southington but when the business failed he moved the short distance to Meriden, CT. He was a volunteer for the South Meriden fire department. Percy had the lead part in at least two South Meriden Volunteer Fire department's plays. He had a fine voice. He was in the painting business but also managed another lunch cart.
He used the first name Joseph when he married his first wife, Vera Habershon, on Dec. 20, 1911 in Meriden. She died six months later leaving him with an infant daughter. He used both first names for about 10 years - having two listings in the city directories. By 1919 he worked in the railroad shop as a repairman with his brother-in-law in Hartford, CT. He was still also a painter and chef.

On June 28, 1922 he married Veronica McArdle in Great Barrington, MA. (again using Joseph, and for ever after using the name Joseph Francis). Her family was Catholic. They had a daughter Marguerite on April 3, 1923 in Hartford but shortly moved to Winsted where Veronica had been born. He then worked for the railroad like his McArdle father-in-law and McArdle brothers-in-law. In 1927 his dear daughter Vera died and soon the family moved to Pittsfield near his wife's elder sister's family. Joseph was a (steam engine) railroad fireman by then. It was a strenuous job - the man who shovels coal into the firebox of the steam engine. He was working as a rail yard watchman on the night he died in a railroad accident in the Poughkeepsie rail yards.
His funeral was in the Meriden, CT., at the home of his McArdle In-laws, with funeral Mass at Saint Joseph's.
