Herb was born to Herbert E. and Jewel Acree.

He graduated from Nampa High School and entered the U.S. Marine Corps in 1946.

He was a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired from the Marine Corps in 1973 as a sergeant major.

After his retirement he moved to Lewiston and worked as a deputy sheriff for Nez Perce County in the 1970s.

He was a 1974 graduate of the Police Officers Standards and Training academy at Lewis-Clark State College at Lewiston. After leaving the sheriff's department, he worked for a period of time as director of security at Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington.

He married Phyllis Owens Jan. 21, 1952, at Winnemucca, NV.
