Active Career in Civic Life Closed by Passing

Arthur E. Dalton died at St. Joseph's hospital at 3 o'clock yesterday morning and in his death Eureka and Humboldt county lost a valued citizen and helpful friend.

Dalton, who for 30 years has taken a prominent part in civic activities, died only a short time after undergoing an operation made in an attempt to cure a serious stomach ailment.

Friends were not aware of Dalton's serious condition when he returned from San Francisco with Mrs. Dalton on Saturday morning. News of his death came as a tragic shock to his numerous friends and admirers throughout Humboldt county.

The grief of the citizens of Eureka was expressed by Mayor Frank R. Sweasey when he was informed of Dalton's death yesterday.

"Stunned beyond adequate expression by the sudden and tragic death of our dear friend and most worthy fellow citizen, Arthur Dalton, I can but testify to the universal sentiment of grief and bereavement manifest throughout our community by reason of his distressing and untimely withdrawal from our midst.

In the passing away of Arthur Dalton, our community is left to mourn one who has devoted a lifetime to constructive civic upbuilding and the City of Eureka as well as the county of Humboldt and the entire Redwood Empire have been deprived of an energetic and tireless worker for the common good"

WAS BORN IN EUREKA

Dalton was born in Eureka 57 years ago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Dalton, Humboldt county pioneers who came to California from St. Johns, New Brunswick, by way of the Isthmus of Panama. He had four sisters and one brother, all of whom are still living. They are Mrs. Huber Ohman, Mrs B. R. Harris, Miss Gertrude Dalton, Miss Julia Dalton and Walter H. Dalton.

After graduating from the Eureka public schools and the Eureka Business college, Dalton was employed as an accountant by the Coldbrook creameries at Loleta. Early in his career he also spent some time associated with the Frank W. Beckwith interests at Hydesville. Returning to this city he held the position of auditor in the H. H. Buhne company until 1907 when he and L. B. Camptor became associated in the wholesale grocery firm of Campton & Dalton.

In 1930 the two partners sold the Campton & Dalton property to the Western States Grocery company. Mr. Campton at that time retired and remained inactive until his death last January.

Dalton was elected to the city council in 1907, beginning his long and active career in public life. He served in the capacity under both Mayor H. L. Ricks, Sr. and W. L. Lambert.

Because of his exceptional knowledge of the needs of the people of this county, Dalton was appointed chairman of the Nine Counties Highway committee of the Redwood Empire Association serving in this capacity as the benefactor of this part of northern California.
