Lizzie McMullen, a recreational sailor, and the wife of a champion solo sailor, died suddenly as a result of an accident while helping her husband to prepare his catamaran "Three Cheers" for the OSTAR solo race across the north Atlantic, from Plymouth, in England, to Newport, Rhode Island, in the United States. A race trophy is dedicated in her honor, endowed by the sponsors and contestants in the race, and first awarded in 1976. Lizzie was survived by her father, and, briefly, her husband.

Mike was encouraged not to withdraw from the race, with the idea that he psychologically needed to follow through, and the persuasive argument, "Lizzie would want you to." Mike started the race, and was last sighted off Galley Head on 6June76. Some few pieces of wreckage washed ashore, and were identified as parts of "Three Cheers."
