Louis Preston Howell, 75, Shelley, retired private detective, died Sunday afternoon in Bingham Memorial Hospital following a lingering illness.

He was born August 24, 1897, in Clifton, the son of William Preston Howell and Harriet Sussanne Porter Howell. His family moved to Warm River in 1902, and when he was seventeen years old he moved to Basalt and later to Shelley.

He married Thelma V Johnson on September 27, 1927, in Idaho Falls. He farmed, herded sheep, worked for several potato processing companies and for ten years he was a private detective. His hobbies were hunting and fishing.

He was a member of the LDS Church and at the time of his death was serving as an Elder. He had been active as a Home Teacher.

He is survived by his widow and the following sons and daughters; Dean L Howell of Idaho Falls, Afton Chase of California, Donna Jean Johnson of Salt Lake City, Utah, Bobby Louis Howell of Salt Lake city, Utah, Ted J Howell of Midvale, Utah, Boyd H Howell of Basalt, Jerry Bruce Howell of Basalt.

The following brother and sister also survive; Willis Howell of Seaside, Oregon, Leah Hambleton of Salt Lake City, Utah, Fonda Haddon of Ogden, Utah; also twenty two grandchildren.

He is buried in the Basalt Cemetery.
