Wenzel, Ann A.

Ann A. Wenzel, age 97, of Manitowoc, passed away on March 29, 2015, following a brief illness. Ann was born Anna Augusta Wulf on August 21, 1917 in Rock Valley, Iowa, to her German immigrant parents, the late Wilhelm and Minnie (Mueller) Wulf.

Ann was raised in Humboldt, South Dakota and spoke only Low German before learning English in Kindergarten. She made her early trips to school in a horse drawn school bus. Ann graduated from Humboldt High School in 1936. Ann moved to Milwaukee following graduation and was later introduced to her future husband, Helmuth "Butch" Wenzel. Ann and Butch were married on September 4, 1937 in Manitowoc and worked the Wenzel family farm for several decades. Ann and Butch took many trips throughout the United States, especially to her home state of South Dakota and to Florida in the winter.

Ann was an active farm homemaker, and enjoyed baking and cooking for her family and extended family. She had many hobbies including embroidery, sewing, and gardening. Ann was fiercely independent and active and always kept herself busy. She loved to watch after the farm cats and to listen to Polka music on the radio. Following Butch's death on February 25, 1984, Ann remained on the farm and took immense pleasure in cutting the lawn on her riding lawnmower, whether it needed it or not. Ann lived at River's Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center in Manitowoc for the past five years and enjoyed playing bingo, doing craftwork, and taking a walk every day to get a breath of fresh air. Ann was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod in Manitowoc for over 70 years.

Ann is survived by her sons: Thomas (Patricia), Oshkosh; and Richard (Marilyn), Manitowoc; grandchildren: Todd (Laura Zuege), Troy (Kerry), Timothy (Julie), Tricia (Adam) Voss; Monica (Jim) Norlin; and great-grandchildren: Audrey, Eliott, Anna, Owen, Luke, Matthew, Natalie, Olivia, Daniel, and Isabelle. Ann is further survived by a special niece, Sharon Wenzel, of Manitowoc, a large extended family in the Manitowoc area, and many family members in the Schleswig-Holstein region of Germany. Ann was preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, Helmuth; her brothers Edward and Max; her son William "Billy"; and numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A Funeral Service will be held for Ann on Thursday, April 2, 2015 at 11:00 A.M. at Redeemer Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, 1712 Menasha Ave, Manitowoc, WI, with Pastor Zach DeArmond officiating. Visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 A.M. until the time of service. A luncheon will follow. Entombment will take place at Knollwood Chapel Mausoleum in Manitowoc. The Reinbold & Pfeffer Family Funeral Home of Manitowoc is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.jensreinboldandpfeffer.com

Ann's family would like to thank the entire staff at River's Bend Health & Rehabilitation Center in Manitowoc for their assistance over the past five years.
