David Ritchie, born in 1740 in Peebleshire, was the dwarf son of a quarry man. His misshapen feet would not permit him to wear shoes so he wrapped his feet in cloth. He built himself (with no help) a cottage fit for a person of his size. He became famous through the works of Sir Walter Scott as David Ritchie was the inspiration for "The Black Dwarf".David Ritchie , known also as David of Manor Water, Bow'd Davie, Crooked David, and most notably the Black Dwarf, was a dwarf born at the slate quarries of Stobo. He was the inspiration for Sir Walter Scott's novel, The Black Dwarf.
