JOSEPH BACKHAUS

Joseph Backhaus, 68, a carpenter at the Holy Family convent at Silver Lake for the last three years and a resident of Manitowoc for over a quarter of a century, was found dead in bed at his home, 718 South 26th street, at 5 o’clock this morning.

Mr. Backhaus worked as usual up to 4 o’clock yesterday afternoon and apparently was in good health when he retired last evening. Physicians said he had suffered a stroke and that death probably occurred at midnight. Mrs. Backhaus discovered that her husband was dead when she arose this morning.

Mr. Backhaus was born in the town of Manitowoc Rapids Jan. 29, 1870. Except for eight years during which he resided at Silver Lake, Mr. Backhaus spent practically his entire life as a resident of Manitowoc. The family re-established its residence in this city about a month and a half ago, moving in from Silver Lake.Mr. Backhaus married Miss Anna Lax April 8, 1902.

She survives, with three brothers, John of Manitowoc Rapids, Nick of Miami, Fla., and Charles of Boyd, Wis., and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Schwoerer of Sheboygan and Mrs. Charles Neuser, city.

The body will lie in state at the Pfeffer funeral home from Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock until the hour of the funeral. The Holy Name society, of which Mr. Backhaus was a member, will recite the rosary Sunday evening at 7 o’clock and the Christian Mothers at 7:30.
The funeral will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. at the Pfeffer funeral home and at 9 o’clock at St. Paul’s Catholic church. The Rev. Martin Jackels will officiate and burial will be in Calvary cemetery.
