Mr. Charles C. Backus, 83, of 1008 N. 15th Street, Manitowoc, died Saturday, January 18, at Holy Family Medical Center, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 9 am Tuesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and 9:30 am at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. Daniel Felton with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.

Mr. Backus was born July 10, 1902 at Mishicot, son of the late John and Catherine Espen Backus. He married the former Irene Sydow on June 23, 1924 at Milwaukee. Mr. Backus was an auto salesman in this area for a period of 25 years and the couple also operated a tavern-hotel at 4 Corners for 12 years. She preceded him in death December 10, 1979. Mr. Backus was a member of Elks Lodge 687, Knights of Columbus Council 710 and the Manitowoc Senior Citizens. He married Theo Shemchak on May 2, 1981 at Manitowoc.

Survivors include his wife, Theo of Manitowoc; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Geraldine and Robert Reinicke of Manitowoc, Arline and Donald Bauer of Manitowoc and Eunice Grenia of Naples, Florida; a sister, Amanda Bauer of Manitowoc; a step daughter, Mary Shemchak of Sturgeon Bay; a step son and step daughter-in-law, Paul and Julie Shemchak of Manitowoc; 18 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and two step grandchildren also survived. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry, Joseph and John and two sisters, Anna Heidorf and Eleanor Roberts.

Friends may call at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, from 4 o’clock to 9 o’clock this Monday evening. A prayer service will be held at 7 o’clock by Deacon Donald Schneider.
