A Herrin man was found dead in his car Friday at his cottage at Devil's Kitchen Lake.

Williamson County Coroner Paul Litton said Elisha Stacey, 70, could have died of a heart attack or of carbon monoxide poisoning while apparently sitting in his car to keep warm. Litton said Stacey was last seen about 3:30 pm. At about 5:15 pm a neighbor noticed his car was still running but he was not visible.

Litton said the car had slid off the road. A shovel was found nearby. He said Stacey may have attempted to shovel the car out and then returned to the car to get warm.

Mr. Stacey, 70, was a retired coal miner and a member of United Mine Worker of America, Local 2618. He was a veteran of World War I, and a member of the Herrin American Legion post, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Herrin Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Stacey was born Oct. 15, 1895, in Herrin, the son of Thorton and Alice Foster Stacey. He married the former Lily Wagoner in 1921 in St. Louis.

He leaves his wife; a son, Charles Morgan; a daughter, Betty Taylor; a brother, William; and a sister, Susan Triplett.
