Sister Filomena Cantafio, MPF, 87, a member of the Religious Teachers Filippini for 61 years, died Tuesday in the infirmary at Villa Walsh, Morristown, N.J.

Born Dec. 26, 1916, in Dunmore,(PA)she entered the Institute of the Religious Teachers Filippini on July 14, 1941, and made her religious profession on Aug. 26, 1945. She earned a bachelor's degree in elementary education from St. Joseph College, Buffalo, N.Y., and a master's degree in elementary education from Canisius College, also in Buffalo.

She was provincial councilor for Mary Queen of Apostles Province for six years and served as local superior for 30 years. She also taught middle and upper grades at St. Ann School, New York City; Holy Redeemer School and Holy Rosary School, both in Cleveland; Sacred Heart School, Stamford, Conn.; Our Lady of Mount Carmel School, Meriden, Conn.; St. Joseph School, Winstead, Conn.; St. Anthony School, Bristol, Conn.; and St. Sebastian School, Middletown, Conn.

She did pastoral ministry while residing at Divine Mercy and Virgin of the Revelation convents, both in Waterbury, Conn., and St. Ann Convent, New Britain, Conn. In 1999, she retired to St. Luke Convent, Ellington, Conn. She entered the infirmary at Villa Walsh in April 2002.

Surviving are three brothers, Anthony and James, both of Dunmore; and John, Baltimore; nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by a brother, Louis, and a sister, Josephine Doino.

The funeral will be Saturday with Mass at 11 a.m. in the St. Lucy's Chapel at Villa Walsh, to be celebrated by her nephew, the Rev. Paul Fontanella. A memorial Mass will be celebrated Jan. 24 at 11 a.m. in St. Anthony of Padua Church, Smith Street, Dunmore.
