Appointed Apostolic Vicar of Hong Kong following the death of Msgr. Raimondi, he received his episcopal consecration with the Titular See of Clazomenae on May 19, 1895. Serious health problems made him leave Hong Kong to his native Italy in August 1904. Passing away there, in 2014, his remains along with those of one of his successors, Msgr. Lorenzo Bianchi, likewise a member of the Institute for Foreign Missions, were transferred to the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of Hong Kong and re-interred in a specially constructed crypt intended to house the remains of Ordinaries of the Hong Kong See.
