Susan Crawshaw was born in Lancashire County, England in 1818. She was one of nine children.

In 1827 her father came to America and worked for five years in order to have the money to send for his family- the 9 children and his wife. Susan later told her family that the trip to America took 16 weeks.

For five years after the family all arrived they lived near Buffalo, New York, then moved to Clinton County, Iowa, in 1832, traveling by boat on the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. They became residents of Iowa nine years before it was admitted as a state to the union.

The family did its trading in Chicago, going back and forth by ox team, and they had to camp along the route each way for several weeks. It was a very difficult life for the Crawshaw family. Susan later said that if they had been able to afford it they would have returned to "York" state, but circumstances were such that they stayed on in Iowa.

In 1844 Susan married Alex Dunn, a young man from Ireland. Her brother James married Alex's sister Dorothy and her sister Elizabeth married Alex's brother Adam. They all made their homes in the Clinton County area and Susan never again left the state.

Susan was known to travel, however, within Iowa. She particularly loved to go to Denison, Iowa, to visit her niece. Her niece was married to Leslie Shaw, one time Governor of Iowa and Secretary of State to President Theodore Roosevelt.

By the time Susan died in 1913 she had 19 living great-grandchildren. She was the oldest resident of Central City at the time of her passing, where she had moved to live with her son James after the death of her husband Alex.
